The Office of Institutional Assessment (OIA) supports the university’s ongoing mission to provide the best possible educational experience for its students by documenting and measuring student achievement and then using that data to determine how courses and programs can be further enhanced and strengthened.
OIA oversees the assessment of general education, academic degree programs (through the Academic Program Review process) and the assessment of specific competencies in critical skills for the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia. OIA also serves the university by conducting survey research on the students’ experiences at the university.
Finally, OIA is responsible for ensuring regular evaluation of the effectiveness of all academic and administrative units through the Mason Assessment Tracking System (MATS). Information from the MATS system is incorporated into budget decisions and used to improve performance in other ways.
