Responding to the university’s core mission of providing accessible higher education programs to Virginia residents, the Mason Online initiative provides a careful, planned approach to expanding the institution’s online offerings.
George Mason University now offers fully online degree and certificate programs in certain key areas – business, engineering, information technology, health care, special education, and transportation policy – as well as one online adult degree completion program. The university also offers a wide array of individual online course options that can be selected as appropriate for convenience in scheduling or to provide an alternative kind of learning environment.
To ensure equally academically rigorous and effective teaching online, the Mason Online initiative provides extensive technological and instructional design support services for faculty transitioning to offering classes online. A highly active faculty advisory council is closely involved in establishing quality standards and in assessing online courses, and in providing feedback to the Office of the Provost about productive directions in online education.
