Responding to the university’s core mission of providing accessible higher education programs to Virginia residents, the Mason Online initiative provides a careful, planned approach to expanding the institution’s online offerings.
George Mason University now offers fully online degree and certificate programs in key areas – business, engineering, information technology, health care, special education, and transportation policy – as well as degree completion opportunities in Technology and Innovation, and Health, Wellness and Social Services. The university also offers a wide array of individual online course options that can be selected as appropriate for convenience in scheduling or to provide an alternative kind of learning environment. Most of the Mason Core (the university’s general education program) courses can be taken online.
To ensure academically rigorous and effective teaching online, the Mason Online initiative provides extensive technological and instructional design support services for faculty transitioning to offering classes online. A highly active faculty advisory council is closely involved in establishing quality standards and in assessing online courses, and in providing feedback to the Office of the Provost and Executive Vice President about productive directions in online education.
