About  Dr. S. David Wu

Provost and Executive Vice President

Mason Provost David Wu

S. David Wu is Provost and Executive Vice President of George Mason University, the largest public research university in Virginia and a Carnegie research-one (R1) institution. Since his appointment in 2014, Provost Wu has created an academic vision for Access to Excellence – building an institution accessible to diverse populations of students, while creating a powerhouse for new ideas and paradigms for world-changing research and learning. Under his leadership, the university experienced the fastest enrollment growth in Virginia, increased student diversity and academic outcomes, and became the youngest institution to receive Carnegie tier-one research designation. He facilitated the establishment of the Science and Technology Campus, the Potomac Center of Environmental Studies, the Institute for BioHealth Innovation, and the Institute for a Sustainable Earth, and attracted a U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security Center of Excellence to Mason. Since his appointment, the sponsored awards for research, scholarship and creative work increased by nearly 80%. He was credited by the Board of Visitors with leading the university’s extraordinary emergence as a top-tier national research institution.

Prior to joining Mason, Dr. Wu was Dean of the P.C. Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Science and holder of the Lee A. Iacocca endowed chair at Lehigh University. Rossin College experienced unprecedented expansion and renewal in the decade under his leadership (2004-2014). At the conclusion of his tenure as Dean, the University established the S. David Wu Endowed Scholarship in honor of his accomplishments.

Dr. Wu is an accomplished scholar in systems engineering and operations research. A IISE Fellow, he has published extensively in his field and has served on various national and international boards, such as the National Science Foundation and the Science Foundation of Ireland. He also serves on the board for Dartmouth College’s Thayer School of Engineering, and was on the engineering advisory boards for the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). In 2015, Dr. Wu received the C.L. Tien Educational Leadership Award. He was a visiting professor at the University of Pennsylvania, and HKUST. He received his M.S. and Ph.D. from the Pennsylvania State University.
